Pony Hitch

In regard to the recent horse trappings conversation, I found this picture interesting. The leaders in this is pony hitch start out four abreast but the wheelers look to be six.

It's Barnum & Bailey, sometime 1908-1918, likely a July 4 [note the flags], perhaps in the mid-1910s. The ponies are pulling the 1871 Howes dragon float, behind it is the steam calliope with the big horn on the side.

The front 12 ponies of this 20 pony hitch have drifted over a little to the right. The front 12 don't look to have any single trees or lead bars. As in the 40 horse hitch, these front horses are just for show. Only the 4 wheelers and the second set of 4 are pulling and keeping lined up to the wagon.

This is not a Fielding-built tableau cage, as stated on another post. Look closely and you'll see the wing structure of the ex-Howes dragon float. You will see the same vehicle in other B&B parade photos of the era.

There is indeed another photo, posted by Holmes, wherein a tableau cage is readily seen. Sorry for the confusion.
