A wonderful, charming set of photos! How fortunate that they were taken and you still have them. Thanks for providing some older European content to the blog. I enjoy learning from any of the comments you add. Dick Flint Baltimore
Sue, It is obviously a balking mule comedy routine in practice. My father and I have had a number of mules in that routine and generally years ago this type of act would be called a January act, with the dialouge between the Rube clown and the dignified Ringmaster-Equestrian DIRECTOR and it would go something like this and get a big laugh in towns like Elkorn, Iowa or Lemonn, South Dakota.
Rube says to announcer,"What is your name"? Announcer replies <"My name is Cob. What is your name"? Rube replies, " My name is Aleck". Announcer says, "You know what we do with smart Alecks in the city?" Rube replies, "No I don't know what you do with Smart Alecks in the city, but I kinow what we do with Cobs in the country.
Generally the Rube would come in the ring following a trick or menage horse and declare that his "critter" could do everything the horse just did and the Equestrian Director would advise him the the horse that just performed was known as a High School Horse. The Rube would reply that his "critter" was known as a "college Jackass".
I note that all the photos are wonderful and could easily be similar to so many of us who have been in that field. A number of years ago I trained four cute spotted ponies for a military drill just like those pictured and I called them the "Marx Bros." Harpo, Chico. Zeppo and Groucho. It appears that your mother was a fine trainer and loved her animals. Thanks for sending them to the Blog.
