For some fascinating reading and photos go to:
quaggaproject.org
A very ambitious effort from some dedicated people who have bred zebra foals with coats identical to the genuine article. Fairly, they have included debate and criticism on the website surrounding their project.
Did anyone else see that 'zeonie" or "zonkie' or what ever the heck it was on CNN the other day in that German zoo? It has the strangest coat I've ever seen on an equine.
Richard Reynolds adds - -
There were geunine quaggas with 1830s travleing menageries in USA.
In his splendid book, "London Zoo From Old Photographs" (a must for anyone interested in animals in captivity) John Edwards published 5 different photographs of a quagga that lived in london zoo from 1851 to 1872.
It is said that last living quagga on earth died in Amsterdan zoo on August 12, 1883.
Finally I can read the whole story line? Is this because of the new puter??Hope so!
Thank you for th einfo on the Quagga. I knew it couldn't be one of those big clams! cc
A quagga, HMMMMM??? Looks to me lika a zee-donk or zonkie or zeonie. Just imagine if Bobby Gibbs worked in a zoo ! Or did he ? Or was Grandpa Gibbs of many years ago?!
Quagas ? That sounds as credible as Mr. Gibbs could muster !
And now a guy in India is claiming to re-invent the extinct species known as the Atlas Lion !
Gibbs is working over time !
Check out Barbary Lions.com the guy says he is gathering lions that he thinks are what Barbary lions MIGHT have looked like, IF he had seen one.
The "Barbary Lion" that is on the banner of his web site came from a private zoo in Oklahoma and his papers said "of unknown origin "
And that's from the guy that raised him !
And for next weeks class we will re-invent the wheel !
Check out my new web-site www.circulartransportationassistants.com
Where's Jimmie Hall when ya need him ?
There was reportedly a quagga with the 1859 Sands, Nathans & Co. outfit. Any others in the US thereafter?
Pat they have shown an animal on FOX news and on the Yahoo site that you may be referring to. It looks like a brown zebra on its rear and head but has a solid white body - Eclysse or something like that?? One of a kind anyway. cc
There's a farm in Tenn. that does nothing else.
Lots of them.
Certainly NOT one of a kind !
They breed them with different breed horses,Donkies and ponies and back to each other
Like most hybrids occasionally a breeding will take.
This does NOT equate to a new breed.
Geez Larry, don't get grouchy! I don't think anyone was suggesting zonkies and zeonies are a new breed. But concerning the quagga, If you take a look at that website I recommended, you'll see this effort in South Africa looks pretty legit, as they're breeding zebras to zebras to resurrect a coat pattern that has disappeared. Take a look, you'll like it. It has a lot of that mitochondrial DNA tracing stuff that you like!
