As I was replacing the Sells & Gray- King Bros. folder this picture from Fred Logan tumbled out. He had written on the back "King Bros.- Robt. D. Cline. Arky called him "No Water".

Robert Dale Cline From the Circus Maximus fame 1968 Paul kaye's, grand tour. During one of the elephant roundups he jerked me out of harms way, I was forever beholding to him while I was filling in for Hog Jaw,under Capt.Logan
Now there was a sweet man who loved his bulls! I promoted the King Show for a few months in 1978.In Winchester VA we had a rare Sunday OFF. We were at the fairgrounds and there was a truck pulling contest there that day. CAP had taken a taxi in to town, rented a room to catch up on sleep, but I found him and woke him up to get the bulls (Ola & Conti at the time) in on the truck pull for publicity... Needless to say, CAP never forgave me for that, but it was splashed all over the paper the next day!
He went to the Chehaw (sp?) Park in So. Georgia after he left the King show, and took care of one Asian & 2 African punks (circa 1979). He loved it there, and they loved him. I visited him a couple of times as the advance crew blew through town. We called him "CAP" ...as long as Freddie wasn't around! :-) Cindy Potter
Someone can fill in more information but I heard about the elephant trainer at Chehaw. Some of the St. Louis Zoo staff returned amazed at some of the hoofed stock that worked like elephants. I'm thinking things like giraffe picking their feet up or backing up on command -- things they're not suppose to do, certainly in zoos. Probably was the work of Robt. D. Cline.
I too remember him as a nice fellow back in his Hugo, OK days.
There were two Robert Clines who worked elephants, the one pictured on this blog entry and Little Bobby who is pictured at least twice on Buckles blog. Ole Whitey sent me a photo that he posted Dec 5, 2006, showing Little Bobby with the Beatty-Cole herd when Rex Williams had them. Roger Smith added some truly wonderful comments that are worth re-reading.
Another photo was posted Sept 22, 2006, showing Little Bobby and Fred Logan with the herd in the 1970s. Various submissions to CircusNews.com in Sept 2005 brought comments that Little Bobby had passed on a few years earlier having last worked as Buckles barn man; earlier, he had done the same for Axel Gautier on the Ringling blue show. The two Cline’s overlapped on Beatty-Cole but Big Bobby Cline blew the show after an argument with Fred Logan in 1972 and it has been said that he eventually married. Does anyone know when and where these guys got started in the business?
A Google search discovered another entry on Buckles blog for December 5, 2006, that refers to one of the Robert Clines but the link did not work. I then tried through this blog’s archives feature but that hasn’t worked very well for some time. (Shannon, please help!) Dick Flint Baltimore
I first remember Robert with Freddie Logan on the old Kelly-Miller show and I first remember little Bobby with Steve Fanning on Cristiani. These were both in the fifties.
Later Robert was on Jack Moore's Carson and Barnes with Shipley in the sixties and still later on the King show of the seventies. I didn't know his wife but I was aware that he had married.
Little Bobby followed Steve to Beatty-Cole in 1960, where he lasted for many years prior to the late-life jobs mentioned above.
Dick, All I can tell you is the oral history of our family says that Uncle Bobby.....Robert D. Cline left home and joined the circus circuit at the age of 14. I would have to look up his DOB to date it but I would imagine well before the 50s

As it turns out, Bob Cline is a fairly common name.
