"The Gump" (From Dave Price)

Gump01, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

The attached photo is scanned from a circa 1930 postcard folder of Sarasota. It relates to the fascinating Samuel Gumpertz
article Fred Pfening put in the newest Bandwagon about and in part by John Kelley. Fred (Jr or III) wrote the introduction and then ran an affidavit that Attorney Kelley had submitted in response to a 1934 complaint by John Ringling regarding the general management of the combined shows and other circus holdings being taken from him and given to Samuel Gumpertz. It is very interesting reading.

In his introduction Fred mentions that Ringling and Gumpertz were old friends and fellow residents of Sarasota. Apparently Gumpertz was considered something of a celebrity in Sarasota as his home was shown among the sights the town had to offer. As you see, it was nothing on the scale of either of the Ringling mansions so I assume it was included simply because of whose house it was. Incidentally, it is the only private residence shown in the folder, though we do find a shot of John Ringling's gate.

I see that I referred to the article in Bandwagon as a "Samuel Gumpertz article."

Actually the article was more about John Ringling and John Kelley, Gumpertz being just one of several other interesting charters appearing in the tale.
