While the panels are now done with digital photographic what-you-may-call-it, like they use on buses. My personal opinion is that it does not, in any way shape or form, replace the artistic rendering of a skilled show painter, such as Mr. Rawls and the late Mr. Boyd, amongst others.
Going from left to right, the first two are OK, just OK to the point of barely passable, the next one: the clown is terrible. His make-up and wig is the kind of stuff that make kids cry and nervous mothers run for cover.
The little dog in the dress should have never been used because it absolutely kills the surprise and novelty of a "dressed-dog" in the show. The Cole Show would get a BIGGER response to the dressed dog if they didn't telegraph the dog in the first place.

I apologize to all those connected with the REAL COLE SHOW, I should have refered to this photo as Beatty-Cole as noted in the header. YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, I know it is now billed as Cole Brothers, but it will always be Beatty-Cole to use cranky old-timers.
On reflection, these panels made of transfers are not only artistically a zero, they look CHEAP.

Barney, I remember seeing Dave Hoover working on panels on CB-CB Circus in Northbrook, IL several years ago. Dave was a good artist.Didn't Henry Thompson (side show talker/manager)do some panels during his circus days?

Barney, you spend years teaching me, that truth don't matter, in the fine art of shit stiring, and now you apologize for getting a fact wrong. I'm confused, what gives? Wade Burck

Oh Mr. Wade...I was refering to the real Cole of 70 years ago, not this try-to-be-copy-cat.
Mr. Wade get your palette wet, next lesson in 15 minutes!

I believe that John Pugh and his creative publicity staff should be commended for the use of those pictorials flanking the Main Entrance. With no side show it was a nice idea to use that similar format to ballyhoo the big show. As to their artistic content, come on, I have never seen side show banners any different and the only artistic triumphs would be the Strobridge-etc. lithos of days ago

What was dipicted on the B-C or now Cole Bros. was exactly what you would see on the inside. I recall the nice pictorial of our camel-llama etc. act my daughter presented and on opening days the press dept. had us take the animals up front and pose in front of the pictorial for general PR stuff.

I think it is a nice innovative idea and can"t recall it hardly being done before. Maybe John North did something similar for that New York Worlds Fair. What say Buckles? If I had a circus I would do something similar. I hope it does sell tickets but it sure adds color to the mid-way.

Imagine children doing similar drawings in their conception and you know what I believe.

I have seen some pretty crude paintings of the fire eater, sword swallower, fat lady, etc. I rest my case.
