William P. Hall #6

"Major" at right came to Hall in 1926 so this picture was taken in the latter 1920's.

1905- Mugivan and Bowers first elephant purchased from Maj. John Gosney of NY.
1905-08 Van Amburg Show
1909-15 Howes Great London Circus
1916-24 John Robinson Circus (American Circus Corporation)
1925 Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus
1926-35 William P. Hall Animal Farm (Owned by Bill Woodcock in 1928)
1936 Cole Bros. Circus
(Major was among the last few elephants to leave Hall's farm, virtually given to the Cole Show but was shot shortly after his arrival 2/10/36 after injuring Joe "Red" Powell.

I've always thought Major and Safari (Jumbo II) would have made a terrific display in the Cole Bros menagerie: two giant tusked males, one an African and one an Asian.

Of course they might have had different ideas about this!

When I was with Emerson Electric in East Staint Louis ,ther was a fellow by the mane of Walter Powell who said he was withe Cole Bros. and work elephants and had been thrown across menagerie into side of cage but didn't say what elephant's name was.Had scrapbook of pictures . Wonder if this Red you mention is same person?

Red Powell died in the 1950's. Does that help clear anything up?
