Baby elephant born October 5th, 1929 at Carl Hagenbeck's Tierpark.
Stellingren, Germany.
This photo was taken when the baby was 24 hrs. old.

My father wrote on the back:
"Am not sure this is a Hagenbeck elephant. Have vague recollection of this picture appearing in a magazine with account of this birth in a different German city. Munich?"

There was indeed an elephant born in Hagenbecks zoo this year and month, but records of birth dates vary from 5th, 6th, and even 3rd of December, according to Page 70, Jumbo auf dem Drahtseil - Elefanten dressuren von gestern und heute by Gerhard Zapf.

It was a bull calf who was named August conceived in asia, the mother was newly imported Roma II. The were both sold to Paris Vincennes zoo in 1932.
