Circus Fans & Friends #6

SAVE2967, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

This undated picture of my dad with Doc and Mamie Capell was taken at the K-M quarters in Hugo.
When D.R. asked Doc what the nut on his circus was, he made the classic reply, "How the Hell should I know. I never made it yet!"

Re: Doc Capell. In 2001 Raul Gomez, who was handling the elephant, Flora, producer David balding in St. Louis, married an attorney from Phoenix, under the Circus Flora tent. (Tino Wallenda assisted.) The newly-wed wife told me she had done some civil legal work for Doc Capell and his son, who operated a small amusement park near Phoenix. She said Doc had given her a collection of posters and other material from his Capell Bros. Carnival and probably from the circus which his sister operated. After his sister's death, he combined the carnival and circus for several seasons before going out of business. The reason I remember Capell is that it wintered at the site of old WW2 POW camp in North McAlester, Oklahoma, where I grew up (about 65 miles north of Hugo).

Doc Capell was around KM in those years in the forties. He would take out a circus for a number of yeaRS CALLED AMONG OTHER NAMES cAPELL bROS. It seems to me that he had a son Bob who ran the circus. It was certainly one of those high weed mud shows right out of Miller family style.

Doc Capell is My great gradfather on the maternal side. He had three son. William (Bill) who still resides in Phoenix with his wife Dorothy, Jack who is deceased, and Robert (Bob) my grandfather who is also deceased. He was married to Norma and they had one daughter, Terry Jean, who is my mother. We still operate a carnival and are very proud of our heritage.

Doc Capell was my Dad's (Harry Capell) Uncle. My name is Bill Capell We attended a tent circus with wild animals (I seem to remember the elephant,) and rides in Tonganoxie, Kansas around 1950, my Dad had a 1950 Buick at the time. My family has always lived in KCMO, where I am retired from the KCMOPD. I play trombone in local bands, and yes I even played for the Barnum and Bailey Circus.
