It appears as if this was a staged PR photo. The photographer took the trouble to bring his backdrop to mask the cage by hanging fabric on the sides and the floor, then pulled it tight to make a neutral background. It was a common technique in the 20's to do so. Slow shutter speeds required that subjects remain stationary. Movement across a busy background would have diluted the image.

never heard of THAT done before. But, that horse sure looks boney - lions too come to think of it.
