Was the tax box where the tax was paid on the free tickets?
Yes, but it was usually placed in front of the Marquee where the comps were presented.
Was this tax legit? Or was it for the show owners Cadillac account?
Evidently it was mostly the latter, when shows folded the Government Tax Lein was usually the finishing touches.
The old Doctor himself- Floyd King-(as long as he thought it would fly) charged a "War Tax" on all comps. And after that he used to add in a "Hospital Tax."
Once when I was on the Beatty-Cole advance we played my hometown and I got a pair of "longs" (meaning passes with a reserved seat coupon) for my parents. My dad made the mistake of telling Frank Orman that there was no longer any tax on circus tickets, but he didn't get far with that unsolicited notion.
