Al G. Barnes Circus 1919

SAVE2901, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Pictures of some old time clowns, a few have been on the Blog before. Only one I recognize is Kinko.
These guys learned their craft on the smaller shows, fairs, parks, etc. before graduating into Vaudeville and the bigger circuses.
In other words the Ringling Show hired a finished product rather than the On Job Training that goes on today. The clowns seen last Thursday were incredibly athletic and ran around a lot, too bad they weren't paid by the mile. An attempt was made at a clown walkaround with pretty grim results, since there was no track or ring curbs, they wandered around the obstacle course.
As the pre-show flotsum & jetsum were being herded back into their seats, the clowns were involved in a bicycle ramp-jump act usually seen done by High School kids. Nuf Ced.
As previously stated, "The show should have started with the National Anthem!"

" OPERTUNITY IS KNOCKING "
& it has been for some time now especially for " what's his names " BIG SHOW . The Space Age IS HERE & isn't it time to Take BIG Action in this NEW FRONTIER . The Modern Canadian , Asian & European Circuses I see on various Web Sites seam to be Very Strong , Exciting & still maintaining the Clasic Circus Flavor .
But than again - There in a TENT !
( a Space Age Tent )

SO - When things go sour -
" SEND IN THE CLOWNS "
LOTS OF THEM

In the back row, from L, is Paul Wenzel in the big black hat. To his L, I think that is Billy Rice in the wide-brimmed white hat. In front of him is Kinko with the top hat and white-bordered lapels. And in front of Kinko--is that Shorty Sylvester?

Isn't this a bit harsh, there's some real talent on the red-show alley, it's all Ken and Nicoles fault for not utilizing it better and not thinking outside the box ring curb.......i get the feeling that they didn't want any of the alley to over shadow what may be Bello's last season on the show (and at 1.6 million plus merch royalties I'm glad he can retire comfortably!!!!)

I saw Kinko in the 40's with Clyde Beatty when he was on Johnny Jones Carvival in Beloit. After the war the lot was turned into a sub-division with 4 room houses for the returniong vets and their families. My dad and I often wondered if they ever dug up the tiger that was buried on the lot.
