RBBB Blue Unit 1979 #1 (Vol. 6)

These Tom Hendricks photos now show closing day in Toledo. Unless it was raining we always took the elephant tent down in the morning. While waiting for the act, Ted Svertesky is deep in thought. The nearest elephant is "Charlie" who today is the principal breeding male at the Ringling Stud Farm.

I just got back from my first trip to Africa. It was a great trip and I enjoyed it a lot. It was wonderful to see elephants in the wild. But the performances of the RBBB elephants under Buckles’ direction still top it. (I think I saw three performances, in three states, that year).
When I was working elephants I got the comment, more than a few times, that seeing elephants in Africa would be a lifetime thrill. I tell you it does not match the thrill of working side by side with them. To all the people that have had the opportunity to work with performing animals, count your blessings. Smokey Jones compared our jobs to professional baseball players. Namely: getting paid to do what we love.
