Hi Buckles,I've been following all of the comments on big cage design on your blog and thought you would like to see this photo from Australia. It was sent to me by Vern Ellis who now lives in Alice Springs, Australia. Vern toured with Sole Brothers and took a series of photos while he was on the show. I'm not sure whether this cage was taken down to be used in the tent during the show or was just for exercise and training for the cats outdoors. Looking at the size of the big top, perhaps the cat act was presented outdoors as a pre or post-show feature.I'll send you other photos as he passes them on to me.All the best,Don

I would guess the show had a day or two off and set the arena outside for practise or exercise. I toured with Sole Bros for 2 years in the 80's and the cat act was always the opening feature, set up in the one ring shortly before showtime. Shortly before we joined the show, owner Joe Perry (no relation!) was killed in the cat arena. Story is... his son Lindsay took over the act that evening.
Thanks Don...
I got the story mostly from Linsday, but between his penchant for embellishing a story, and my memory's habit of fading over the years, I should have researched the facts a little better. Since this website is dedicated to the history of circus, it is best to have all the facts correct.
