To Jimmy Hall

When Cheerful Gardner was on the Polack Show, he worked these four elephants. The first two are "Bonnie" and "India" which had been purchased from Laura Anderson and are the same two seen in picture #9 below.
The other two are the last of the Powers elephants "Lena" and "Jennie".
In the summer of 1949 the show bought three punks for Cheerful to train "April", "May" and "June" but his failing health prevented him from getting the job done. The following winter these four were sold to Mills Bros. Circus and replaced by the MGM elephants, the punks were also sold to the Kelly-Miller Show. My dad changed their names to "Hattie", "Anna May" and "Norma".

No Toby Tyler or Carson-Barnes T-shirts on Cheerful. He is dressed like a general in the cavalry.

I love the formal uniforms of bygone days. I think it contributed to the aura of professionalism that a circus wanted to project. That said, I'm the sloppiest dresser on the planet, and from a marketing point-of-view, it's never too late to dig somebody up and put 'em in a Carson & Barnes teeshirt.
