The show looks much better than it did last year. Much cleaner.
I also have a question...
Does anybody know if Clyde Beatty Cole Bros. did a spread in Playboy in the 1970's? I heard rumor that they did and I find that very interesting.
July 1973, page 135. Also of interest is the Fred Powledge article in the April 73 issue page 154.
this looks like a show i would enjoy, one of the few real old-fashioned circuses left. regarding the comments above, if i remember correctly, it was one of the Christiani girls with the beatty elephants
It was "TINA C in the "PLAYBOY"
I just buy it for the articles....really
Circus folds its tent in York, leaving hundreds standing at the gate.
By Adam O'Daniel · Enquirer-Herald - 03/30/07
Lewis & Clark Circus left town without performing Wednesday night after failing to meet city safety guidelines, officials said.
The Lewis and Clark Old-fashioned Circus turned away hundreds of would-be customers after many stood in line for more than two hours to purchase tickets.
Trey Eubanks, York city manager, said circus officials decided to close down around 7 p.m. after a late-afternoon meeting with city leaders. The circus started erecting its tent Wednesday morning at an empty lot on Blackburn Street for a one-day performance. However, Eubanks said the company began construction without obtaining a temporary circus permit as required by a long-standing city ordinance.
"These folks never approached the city to find out what they needed to do," Eubanks said.
He said city officials didn't know a circus had even been scheduled until residents notified City Hall on Wednesday afternoon.
Circus officials could not be reached for comment Thursday. City officials said Lewis and Clark did not provide them with any contact information. And an Internet search failed to locate an official Web site or contact information for the group.
Eubanks said city leaders met with circus officials at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday to scramble to approve a permit. The circus was asked to provide lighted exits for customers, show proof that its 60 foot by 90 foot big top tent was flame retardant and remove three caged tigers from the premises, Eubanks said.
When city staff inspected before signing off on the permit, circus officials could not prove the tent was flame retardant. Eubanks said the circus was told it could still receive a permit if organizers moved the bleachers away from the tent. But circus officials decided to close down instead, Eubanks said.
"The code is very clear," Eubanks said. "They did not have certification, and they decided they were going to close up and leave town."
Eubanks said circus acts are welcome inside city limits as long as they apply for a permit and follow the specified guidelines.
"There are just certain things that are required to ensure the safety of our citizens," he said.
Oops! York is in South Carolina.
Some of my earliest recollecions of life are from the Wallace Bros. Quarters in York.
I think fair is fair here. The article was published based on what the city manager was saying not what was happening. Straight from Lewis and Clark management, the show garnered a city attorney, who happened to be the ex-mayor to help in the situation. The ex-mayor already told the town he took them to the supreme court and won one time and they should be prepared again. The tent is Flame retardent and has the labels sewn on the tent as required by law. The show was required by the town to have a piece of paper from the tent manufacturer that was indeed faxed to them but not fast enough according to the city manager. About the only 100% factual part of the article was hundreds of people were turned away.
