Hartford Fire 1944 #1

These pictures of the dreadful Ringling Show fire in Hartford, Connecticut on July 6, 1944 from Roger Smith.

"All photos in this series are credited to Ernestine Clarke. She was on the show that year, and was an accomplished photographer. At the ourbreak of the fire, she began shooting with her Nikon 35mm still camera." Roger

Hi Roger,
Thank you so much for sharing the great Hartford fire pictures with us. She did a great job on shooting them as I have heard that Ringling had there goon squad out to keep folks taking photos.
When you said she shot the photos with a 35mm Nikon. Me being a camera bug as well as a circus buff I looked in my camera books and Nikon did not make their 35mm rangefinder until 1948.
Now Leica and Zeiss Ikon Contax had 35mm rangefinders in the 30's and 40's but remember that World War 2 was going on and we did not import cameras from Germany or Japan. Now a dealer could have new old stock in the 40's but not Nikon which camera out in 1948.
These were calssified as minature
cameras.
Just trying to help.

I can only refer to the camera of Ernestine's which Kim has today. With your information, we were both mistaken that this was the camera in use that day. Thanks for sharing this knowledge.
