Lee Bros. Circus 1946 #8

"Costellos's Lions"

The steel arena is flush up against the sidewall.
Looks like a "crummy" over the fifth wheel and of all things, two chariots loaded on top of the semi in the background.

Can a reader contribute some history on Costello's Lions?

I made some comments a few weeks ago after an inquiry by Rob Huston in regard to Afro-American trainers. Costello was black and he had an adult son that also worked animals. In winter of 45-46 my Dad was in a business of training domestic animal acts and selling them. He trained a pony drill and a long line high school pony among some things that the Costellow came and bought and my Dad taught the son to work them. They were pretty fine educated people and bI believe the father was a skilled artist-painter and painted religeous events in churches, alters, etc. When they spent about a week [this was in Centreville, Iowa] here come Bob Atterbury with a truck and hauled away, but the animals were owned by t5he Costellows. Would like to here more about them I believe some trained mules were part of the deal. Thats the first tme I met Bob and he was a feisty guy even then. I believe his father had a wagon show in earlier years.

Does any of you mud ahow historians out there have any information on Costellos lions before and after Lee Bros.

I note the cat truck backed up to the sidewall at what appears to be the round end and can assume the arena was set up right inside and would remain up. Looks just like Junior Ruffins set up on Hoxie Bros. when I was there.
