Magnificent male orangutan with fully devleoped cheek blinkers and large pouch below the chin. I'm not expert enough to say if these are more typical in the Sumatran subspecies or of those from Borneo.
Reminds me of Edgar Allan Poe's short story, THE MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE published in 1841. Also interesting is that the famous American anatomist Richard Harlan wrote a paper around 1826, DESCRIPTION OF AN HERMAPHRODITE ORANG OUTANG LATELY LIVING IN PHILADELPHIA. I wonder,it would be interesting to know what became of its hide and skeleton,a logical place would be the Wistar Institute or the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia.

Can you tell anything about when this photo might have been taken. The phtographers name in the lower left reads - -"Lewison photo, S.A."
Am I correct that Tol Teeter was a carny?
I have the impression that Tol Teeter was sort of a rep show with some circus acts. I knew a guy who was over there in the long ago.
