Roman Proske #1

During the switch from Picasa to Picasa 2, a number of comments didn't make it to print.
One was a tribute to Rex Rossi from John Herriott and another was a request for pictures of Roman Proske.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was his Judith tiger who took him down and tore off his hip. Mabel Stark liked Proske and respected him, but she told me they teased each other unmercifully. He called her "This wrangy OLD broad chasing stripes", and she called him "My favorite half-assed tiger trainer."

Hugo Schmidt named his son Roman after Roman Proske.

My uncle worked for Proske as a young man. We have pix of him with various of Proske's animals, and an inscribed copy of "Lions, Tigers and Me," where he thanks my uncle for helping save his life.

Haven't read the book in awhile, so don't recall if this is in there--the story we got in the family was that Proske, as a child of the Great Depression, didn't trust banks. He kept cash at his house, and when the house burned down, the cash burned also. My uncle always called his time with Proske's Tigers "the happiest time of my life."
