Jimmy Hall #2

"After Mr. Hall's beautiful tribute in picture #1, the info on these next two is rather sketchy.
I'm sure this is Laura Herriott and Gil Gray."

"John Herriott once told me that Mr. Gray came up to Baraboo for the parade on several occasions and in fact, appeared in the parade one year, portraying P.T. Barnum." Buckles Posted by Picasa

After getting roped into helping set up and tear down the circus at the Dallas Fair Gil Gray is easy enough to recognise, but I am quite sure that the young lady went by the name of Marla Gutche

I was too little to remember being on the Gil Gray Circus when my folks were young and first married, but they always tell happy stories of that time. I personally have GREAT memories and photos of working for Gil Gray on the Dr. Pepper free circus at the State Fair of Dallas. Before Evansville, it was the highlight of our year.

That is my daughter Laura. She was 12 at that time and we had been with Gil prior to coming to CWM. He was indeed a fine man, great showman and I was with him seven years and proud of every moment. He wasvery loyal to all of his people and never had a contract with anyone. His word wasw his bond. I looked to him as a second father and he was my idol to this day.

One year Paul Kaye was the Ringmaster in Ft Worth, & Al Dobritch was there visiting, so he had Paul call Gil Gray on the phone and invite him to their hotel to discuss renting Gil's beautiful Spec Floats for Detroit.

Now to begin with Gil wassn't about to send his floats out and take a chance on something happening to them, especially up in all that ice & snow.

He did however agree to discuss the matter but informed them that they should come to his hotel in Dallas, which they did. After hours of conversation it started getting late, & Paul had a show to do, so they left. When Al got into the car, he closed the door, turned to Paul and said,"Vot did he say"????

Al was pretty good at the "con", but he just met the "Master".

True or not, that's the way I heard it!!!!

Gil Gray was certainly at Circus Parade in the years that Herriott, Gene Holter, John Rivers and a whole lot of characters used the event to gather. Grey was someone you don't forget. Well dressed in coat and tie and liberally covered with gem stones, he struck a stately air. In the Pfister bar one night he suggested I ask a gorgeous young gal at other end of bar to join him. When I asked how in the hell I was expected to be any kind of success at such a project, he said to ask he if she would like to meet Senator Grey. I did and she did.

He loved everything about the whole Train, parade and showgrounds except the toliets on our antique coaches. Said he was constipated for three days....Paul Ingrassia

I believe the last time Gil visited Baraboo was in 87. While there he asked if Dumbrowsky's was still in operation. I said you bet.He soon recommended we head out on a spiritual quest to that establishment. We soon arrived at this land mark, climbed onto the bar stools and put in our order, the bartender handed us our drinks and stared at the boss mans ring, then looked up and said, "Sir, are you Gil Gray?" Gil said "Do you remember me?" "Yes sir I do. You got my father and me tickets to the Dallas Cowboys game at the Cotton Bowl many years ago. I will never forget that ring of yours." Two hours then passed before I could get Gil pryed off that bar stool. You see the drinks were then on the house.
