Eph Thompson #1 (From Raffaele De Ritis)

Ephrahim Thompson's elephants act was brought to Europe in 1887 by Carl Hagenbeck for his very first circus in Hamburg. Here are two German posters of the time (from two German books): remark that they printed them in English. I don't think that this was the first "6 elephants group" on the continent. I believe that in the early 1870s John Cooper presented as well 6 with Myers American circus in Europe. And the Lockarts was active at the time too. Posted by Picasa

Eph Thompson was a big man, around 6 foot 4 inches tall ,I think.

If you go to newspaperarchive.com.
There are several large newspaer ads for the
GRAND TRANS-CONTINENTAL TOUR
OF FOREPAUGH'S AGGREGATION,
of the Summer of 1877,
with its
HERD OF SIX PERFORMING ELEPHANTS.
The illustration shows six big elephants standing on their hind legs plus a very small elephant in the ring with them.
Back then the circus's were compeating for the most elephants.
Howe's Great London show had advertised
FIVE PERFORMING ELEPHANTS
worked by George Arstingstall
beginning in October 1873 up until the show merged with Cooper&Bailey around 1879.
