Sad news from Texas!

Heard earlier today that Bucky Steele had passed away but it wasn't confirmed until this evening.
He will be buried Friday at his own burial grounds at his ranch in Jefferson, Texas, shared by his father and Bill Johnston. Posted by Picasa

Well its about time, GEE GEE! Bet you have some tales to tell. Buckles probably won't print the REALLY good ones. Welcome to the blog. Almost as much fun as being on the route again.

This is sad news. I first mey Bucky when he and Gee Gee had their Cosack Elephants in Calgary (1970) when I was working the elephants there. He was always very open and helpfull. I remember a great time at his place in Seagoville after the Dallas Shrine Show. When Lee Keenar with the Diano elephants and Albert Rix and his bears laid over, also with us was Slim Lewis. Great memories.

The five elephants were zola, roxy, gee gee, schell and bukalee (buke).

I remember the truck and trailer very well as I lived in the crummy behind the cab for 6 years during summer break from school. I helped build that bull trailer one winter in Seagoville, Texas. It was early in my career as an apprentice elephant trainer with Bucky (which involved shoveling voluminous amounts of shit) that I had an epiphany that directed me to go to college.
Funny how inspiration comes. He was a great trainer and a great builder of everything mechanical.
I learned a lot about the value of work from him. I wish his family the best especially his wonderful brother Gary who has spent his life in Africa helping tribal peoples survive.
