Now that would be a show stopper in my mind, though few spectators would understand how amazing this combo is. Where was this act from?

Rebecca, where are you?

I am so trying to be nice here. This person and I are having words the past couple of months. This person did a lot of poseing for the papers. Eloise did ALL the work. I replaced Patricia Jamison in more ways then one. Like I said HELL hath NO FURY like a WOMAN [and I use that term loosely here] scorned. Seems like after 45 years she would be over it. I never got over him and she never got over me.

No!No! Circusman wanted to know where the act came from.

I got my acts mixed up. Medication time.

Are we going to have to break out the Co2 fire extingushers here?

So,,,,where did the act come from?

This was a John Cuneo act.

I got this photo from Bill Strong, the act was on the Al G. Kelly-Miller Bros. Circus in the late 1950's

Jimmy, DR bought the act in the early 60s. I was working it then. JC just never had any pictures made of me as I was not supposed to work the act. The only professional pictures taken were by circus fans and the news papers. DR did not want to pay me the salary JC worked out and never really took that much of an interest in the act after buying it. It was not really a mud show act and the props, etc. fell apart real quick. This zebra went down with the ship and this leopard "KIM" was killed by a mistake by someone who knew her problems and just wanted to make himself look good. I told the vet what the problem was but he listened to another male. What did a female know? Things have really changed and so much for the better.

I first saw the act on Polack Bros in 1959 and I'm pretty sure it was 1961 that the act came over to Kelly-Miller. I was in Hugo that spring and everyone was talking about it. Ree-Gards, Ole Whitey

Rebecca, Thank you for clarifying the time frame on that act being on Kelly Miller. So, was Eloise the original trainer? When did she present the act? I assume it did some Shrine dates prior to it being sold to Kelly Miller. Can you give us the full year by year history on this act, minus the personal stuff?

Jimmy I have told the story sooo many times I get sick of it. The personal stuff is all I like to repeat and it gets pretty rough. I don't tell as much over the computer because there are kids involved and I would never say anything to hurt them. JC worked the act before I did on the last of the Tom Packs dates. and Eloise when she was on the same dates. This is when I was just learning the circus. I did do Shrine dates the winter before I went to Kelly Miller as JC had already booked them. These were the Herbert Castle and Al Dobritch dates. Eloise worked the Canadian National the one year and I did the next.

ole whitey maybe you can clear some things up for me regarding 1960 and 1961. There was a lot going on that I knew nothing about until it was too late. Can and will you e-mail me?

I was going to make a comment on this discussion, but it seems like there is enough "tinder" at the moment for a big fire. I will wait until it needs to be "fanned", before commenting. Everybody step back. Wade Burck

The act worked Minneapolis for Hubert Castle in 1961, originally it was supposed to be a display, with Pallenberg's Bears in one end, Beebe's Bears in the other & Cuneo's Wild Animal Display in the center.

We were there with Trudy & Joanne working in Warvel's White Horse Troupe,(no hands bareback jumping), & Trudy was working with The Flying Wards.
I was working props and really don't remember that display coming off. I do remember working Emil Pallenberg's ring, & when his bear jumped off the motorcycle & ran he hollered at me, "catch that bear", on my way over the hockey dasher I hollered back, "catch that s.o.b. yourself"!
Oddly enough there was an act on the show named "Robert's Leopards"
Come to think of it I'll post that line up, it's what I call a "MixMaster Program".

Sorry for the distress, I was just curious who broke the act. Didn't mean to fuel an old fire. Did I miss my answer somewhere or was it Eloise?

I'm with Circusman on this one. From Rebeccas answers and those from others, one can pretty much piece together the history of this unique wild animal act. It is still unclear however whom was the original trainer. Sounds like it might have been Eloise, and that 1959 is when it was first presented (?).

By the way, wasn't there some type of entrance carving ( like a leopard with it's mouth open) on the arena?

That's right, I had almost forgotten that. There were two doors, one on top of the other, the dogs entered thru the lower door but an adjustable divider forced the cats to enter thru the upper door which had a large Dragon Head mounted on the inside.
It was impressive to see the leopards enter thru the dagon's mouth but like most Cuneo creations, lots of working parts.
The zebra was led in thru the side door, mid way thru the act.

Here's story you can believe or not. While his acts were working Ft Worth, DR came to visit and he & JC began discussing the fire that destroyed the truck used for this act. DR mentioned that it was still in a junk yard near by so JC went to look at it. Noticing the rollers on the back for the wench cable he had the junk yard guy cut them off with a torch, & they were later used on "Mr" Voss' truck. Maybe Wade can expand on this.

Just another story as to how FRUGAL JC was. Makes my picture taking story more real. Why spend money when you don't have to. You should try living like this!!!!! It was a great learning tool for the future. He taught me soooo many things. Wish I had had spelling lessons.
