Ringling-Barnum Circus 1948 #6

These are the 5 German elephants brought over by Hugo Schmitt the previous year, "Icky". "Sabu", "Mudu", "Minyak" and "Kernaudi".
The African "Emily" was also added to the herd in 1947 on June 26 at New Brunswick, NJ, six days after Hugo and his elephants had arrived in Pittsburgh from Sweden.

Icky was the last of this group to die in 1980. She was my lead elephant for the first half of the season. Three months after retirement she was gone. I always felt this was speeded up by her leaving the herd she had been with since coming to this country.

I truely believe when an elephant is forced to leave the place they lived at {ZOOS} they die sooner. Keeping them drugged with [FLOWER ESSENCE]etc only prolongs the process so some ignorant people can play doctor and make themselves look good for donations from the uninformed Did they find out if "JENNY" had TB yet?

Icky is also the hindleg walking elephant in the movie GSOE.
