I was in the Artillery (a Mortar Battery) and the tent in question was for FDC (Fire Direction Control) maybe 10' square and carried in the truck pictured at left.
I knew from training that at each new location, we were supposed to be ready to fire in about 9 minutes. On my first "set-up" I was surprised to see everyone unroll the tent, put poles under it, hold it upright and then start yelling at some poor soul who was trying to drive wooden pegs into the ground with the back side of a hatchet.
Over a period of time I managed to get something like a small sledge hammer, had some re-bar made into stakes and even tried to have racks added to the sides for the poles but got a beef over that.
I even suggested that someone could take an extra hammer and stakes ahead with the 24 Hour Man and have the stakes down when the Battery arrived but this fell on deaf ears.

Probably not wear your field cap in fear of distrubing your hair styling job -- one of those 25 cent GI buzz cuts.

Isn't Wapakoneta the home of "America's favorite dog catcher" Dick Kohlreiser? Also Neil Armstrong, the guy on the moon, but on this site more people know Kohlreiser.
