I had the good fortune to have worked with Fay Alexander in “Be a Star Circus,” at Circus World back in my “Help Mister Wizard” days. There are so many great stories about Fay, from being Howard Hughes personal barber, to being Goofy with his clown car at Disney. Once upon a time at Circus World Fay had us all working on a new net between shows, none of us could keep up with his splicing, and after a week or so when the net was finished and our finger ached down to the bone, he showed us the little splicing tool the he had hidden in his hand.
How many of you remember Fay "pickin"? He would hold a piece of buckshot between his teth & flip it at people with a small piece of spring steel that he pretended was a tooth pick. I saw him actually pick some one he was holding a conversation with, & they had no idea who was doing it. He had Al Dobritch going out of his mind once, & Al was getting so violent that Fay had to confess and showed Al how he did it. From then on Al would get Fay to pick others so he could watch the fun. Billy Powell was also a "picker"
Fay always spoke of how much he enjoyed being with the Hartzells. Previously he had sustained a shoulder injury that appeared to be the end of his career, so he went to barber school and worked in his fathers barber shop. The shoulder did heal and he went with Hartzells and continued on with an illustrous career.
I can proudly say that Fay was a very dear friend of mine for well over thirty years, since our time together at Disneyland and he was also my personal barber when we would be together. I remember so well sitting in a chair out in front of my barn with Fay cutting away and the hair flying away in the breeze. He said he liked to stay in shape and guess what? he never charged me, but we would tip a few Black Velvet and Seven. I would spend some time with him on the day of his passing.
24-hour-man: Funny that you brought Fay's "pickin" up because he told us that story almost word for word about Al Dobritch while we worked on his net.
