From Dave Price

This just came in and my first thought was of Paul Ingressia who for many years was involved with the Milwaukee Parade and always on the lookout for off beat things like this.
This looks like something the Barnes Show would do.

By the way, Paul sent me an article from the New York Times Magazine entitled:
ARE WE DRIVING ELEPHANTS CRAZY? Their behavior in the wild has grown strange and violent in recent years. Researchers say our encoachment on their way of life is to blame.
AN ELEPHANT CRACKUP? Attacks by elephants on villages, people and other animals are on the rise. Some researchers are pointing to a species-wide trauma and the fraying of the fabric of pachyderm society. Elephants of decimated herds have exhibited behavior typically associated with post-traumatic stress disorder in humans.
Written by CHARLES SIEBERT.

(I personally think the solution is quite simple. Round them all up and ship them to Tennessee).

Obviously it is Al G Barnes and the guy in the cart is a long time Barnes all around animal person. He was known as "Alabam". A black man, and there are other photos of him and about him in a great old book entitled "Al G Barnes master showman"
.. Its a great book about that circus in its heyday. I am sure alot of historians have it in their collections.

In this Barnes book are great photos of Louie Roth, Mabel Stark and the other great Barnes trainers and the animals of that time. A great photo of the handsome Al G himself mounted on his horse Full Dress and him on Tusko. Included is the story of the incident of Black Diamond mauling and killing a lady right on the street and the series of oictures of him being shot. Now there has been talk that the reason that Diamond singled the lady out from a group of bystanders was that the lady was experiencing her monthly period. I would like hear from you elephant historians out there of what knowledge you might have in regard to any of that incident.

I had just hauled out my copy last week, and found it as enjoyable as ever. The original was published in 1938, I noted here. My copy was printed in London and Toronto, with no year given.

Another great book from that era is the Dave Robeson bio of Louis Roth. Its rare now, but worth getting your hands on it.

Tenn does not allow males or babys. That is enough to crack up anyone. Their esteemed leader has neither either. Family life [elephants] is not wanted in Tenn. Just a bunch of old, wonderful elephants getting fat, lazy, pms and humping each other. What a life.

Sounds like another "QUACK UP" from tenn.

This week, on National Geographic, I think it was, they translated an interview with an Asian woman who had barely escaped a prolonged and determined elephant attack. The slant being, human encroachment indeed has accelerated attacks and deaths by elephants.

Remember when Peter Finch's old man angrily built his mansion in their migration path in MGM's ELEPHANT WALK? For a time, he drove the elephants off by force. Then they came back.
