Bertram Mills' Circus Program 1926-27

This program has so many interesting photos that I have decided to include more at various intervals.

October should be an entertaining month. Last night I received over 20 View Master transparencies from Eric Beheim of the 1951 Ringling Show including views of the DeMille film crew in both Sarasota and on tour.
Also an excellent set of photos of Joe Arcaris working lions from Jimmy Cole. I never met Mr. Arcaris but have heard that he did some training for Clyde Beatty.

This Show seams to have had an Art Director that packed a
" lota " punch into a powerful , simple style , always clever & very clean Program Cover.
Beautiful Promotional Material.

Rebecca,
I'm back at work as of Sept. 1st and the 12 and 14 hour days are not a treat I assure you. I have as many good days with my knee as I have bad days. Needless to say the ice pack and pain pills aren't completely thrown away yet. Actually, I have been researching the Cetlin and Wilson Carnival all summer long for an article for the Carnival Model Builders magazine. It has been a fantastic project and I have had the great opportunity to work with other historians in the process. It's been a lot of fun.

As for animal news, I saw on the internet this morning that a pet shop was torched near Boston the other day and is being considered animal terrorism at this time.

I do read the blog everyday but don't slow down to write very often. Thanks for asking,
Bob

The Jerry Digney article on G.S.O.E. was in the Nov./Dec 1991 issue of Bandwagon -- I enjoyed the article ,and kept it seperate , which is why I could locate it -- great job , Jerry - could you update it now ??

There is a show called Lewis and Clark Circus here in Cheraw, SC tomorrow advertising their Big cats under canvas. I know nothing about them. Anyone else heard of them?

For Buckles: Joe Arcaris was the one man Beatty called for when he could not finish the 1950 season after the death of Harriett Beatty. Eddie Howe wrote me the publicity people stayed up all night writing new copy and designing new ads proclaiming Joe Arcaris was substituting for Mr. Beatty. Arcaris told me he took over at once, but was glad when he could leave--the tour, the band, getting ready for the show, was all getting to him. He was falling in love with it, and didn't really want to remain a circus man. But indeed, for the time of need, his background with Beatty made Arcaris the man of the hour.

To Anonymous: It hadn't been Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. since 2003, when the title became The New Cole Bros. But I remain uninformed of a sale.

John Turner, of Great Britain, advise that Mabel Stark presented lions for Mr. Mills during the two seasons represented here. I'm anxious to see what coverage this program afforded her.

It's Kelly-Miller that's for sale.

John Herriott got a call from his daughter on the show who said there was an official announcement from the management to that effect.

Clyde Beatty, Jr. told me Dick Garden did not buy, but leased the Clyde Beatty name for a year. I'm surprised at how very little I've heard about this show, including who's around the thing. Perhaps someone out there is better informed...?

For roger- the beatty show played hampton university this past spring. i was unable to attend but a friend who went said it had brunon's cat act, the garden libery act, a flying act, elephants, and others. (i don't remember the names) he said it was a good show -- and he knows the difference; he has seen every ringling edition for at least 30 years as well as beatty, carson barnes and other shows playing around here. he and his children enjoyed it much more than they enjoyed ringling blue (big surprise) he questioned how they could make it with such a small crowd on a sunday afternoon -- the only advertising he saw was a flyer in the mail i assume mailed to certain zip codes - he only lives a few miles from HU. (he knew there was no press because he works for the daily newspaper there)

It is a shame we can not all chip in with our social security checks and buy Kelly Miller! What a circus it would be. Just for senior citizens. I could do a wheel chair wheelies act. With all our replacement parts there has to be talent out there.
