3 weeks ago I saw two elephants at Memphis zoo balance-beaming just like this along a high curb on the edge of a new deep pool. They do it just to avoid stepping on sharp crushed gravel that was trucked in and piled on top of pavement -- probably because the 22-year-old with vision problems had banged her toes really bad when the new curb was first installed. Long story, but I wish I had video to show how well the two use the narrow smooth edge to get where they want to go, conscious of the new hazard (and the older one warning the younger) but speedy and confident. Their solution to a big, expensive, bonehead human error in changing the enclosure.
