Sorry I am always late commenting, but I never get a chance to look at the computer over the weekend. With regard to my two acts in Japan, the zebra act consists of 2 Chapman's Zebras and 2 Grant's Zebras, both of which are subspecies of the Burchell's Zebra or Common Zebra. I was always told the Chapman's Zebra was the best for training, as they generally have a quiet temperament, which I totally agree with. All the old travelling menageries and Hagenbeck's in particular favoured the Chapman variety. The Grant's were always a favourite of Knie's in Switzerland, but only because of their looks. The two we have are of a completely different temperament to the Chapman's. I have trained about 30 zebras and have always found the Chapman to be superior in temperament and intelligence. The males are always better than the females.
As for the giraffe, this is a Rothschilde's x Masai. Both of which are subspecies of the Common Giraffe. The Rothchilde's are definitely temperament-wise much better than the Masai and the Reticulated. They also have a far better survival rate in captivity, but are definitely rarer in the wild state. The giraffe we have is almost 18 feet and is the best I have ever owned. You can take him anywhere.
For the record the cage act consists of 6 tigers, 1 lion, 2 lionesses and a leopard, which is presented by Pat White and John Illig.
Thank you Jim for your comments. They are always interesting and informative.
Is the cat act still at the Kinishita circus ?
