Beatty-Cole Elephants in the 1970's #1 (Jimmy Cole)

This is 1970, Fred Logan's first year with Beatty-Cole after 20 seasons with Kelly-Miller. Freddy had great staying power, his entire career consisted of only a half dozen shows. Smokey sometimes made that many in a season.

I knew Smokey for some forty years and I never saw him in wardrobe or work an act.

THIS SURE BRINGS BACK MEMORIES... I KNEW FREDDY AND HIS FAMILY FROM THE KELLY- MILLER SHOW. FREDDY HAD A LION ACT ALSO. IN '64 HE TOOK A TUMBLE FROM AN ELEPHANT AND BROKE HIS LEG. EVEN SO HE CONTINUED WORKING THE ACT WITH A CAST ON HIS LEG. THE ENTIRE FAMILY WERE ALL GREAT SHOW PEOPLE. THE BOYS WERE CANDY BUTCHERS AND THE GIRLS WERE ALL IN THE AERIAL ACTS OR DOING SOMETHING IN THE SHOW, IF I RECALL CORRECTLY I BELIEVE FRED AND OLA HAD 7 OR 8 KIDS . I RECALL WALTER WAS ABOUT 11 OR TWELVE WHEN THEY CAME TO THE BEATTY SHOW, HE WOULD DO "CHERRY PIE" AND HELP US UNLOAD THE CHAIR WAGON. WE NICKNAMED HIM "WIMPY" BECAUSE HE LIKED HAMBURGERS SO MUCH.
ONE DAY ON THE BEATTY SHOW WHILE RAISING QUARTER POLES, THE ROPE ON THE LIGHT CHANDELIER BROKE AND IT CAME DOWN AND HIT FRED RIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES. THIS CURTAILED FREDS TOUR FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON. BUT EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE FAMILY KEPT WORKING WHILE FRED WAS IN THE HOSPITAL. HIS SON CHUCK AND I WERE ASKED TO DRIVE THE CADDILAC AND AIRSTREAM OVER THE ROAD FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS. I REMEMBER AFTER TEARDOWN EACH NIGHT WE'D GET INTO THE CADDIE AND THERE WOULD BE A HAM AND CHEESE SANDWICH WAITING FOR US ON THE FRONT SEAT. THANKS TO OLA LOGAN...MAY GOD REST HER AND CAP'S SOUL.
