John and Mary Ruth Herriott

This interesting picture taken by Jimmy Cole in 1969 shows "Toby", Topsy" and "Eva" at the Mid- South Fair in Memphis after the Baraboo Museum had closed for the season.
Actually the elephants had already been sold to the Ringling Show and John said that he was contacted by Allen Bloom and asked if on their way to Venice, could they swing by NYC and put the elephants and ponies in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
This is great story if we can get John to tell it.

FROM MEMPHIS WE RETURNED TO BARABOO AND PREPARED TO MOVE OUR PERSONAL LIFE AND THE ANIMALS TO VENICE AND RBBB. I RECEIVED A CALL FROM ALLEN BLOOM ASKING ME WHILE ON THIS TRIP TO JUST STOP BY IN NEW YORK AND DO THE MACY PARADE AND PREPARADE NETWORK TV SHOW. DURING THE TRIP I WAS ADVISED THAT BECAUSE OF A SCARE BY SOME MINORITY GROUP THAT THERE WOULD BE NO ELEPHANTS IN THE PARADE OR ALLOWED IN THE CITY BECAUSE OF FEAR OF BOMBS OR FIRECRACKERS. SO WE ARRIVED AND PARKED THE BIG BARABOO CWM ELABORATELY PAINTED SEMI RIG RIGHT BESIDE MACY STORE. WE KEPT THE ELEPHANTS LOADED AND NEVER VOLUNTEERED THAT WE HAD ANY ELEPHANTS. I BELIEVE THAT RINGLING HAD INTENDED TO SEND FIVE OR MORE ELEPHANTS AS WELL TO PUBLICISE THE SPRING SHOWING IN THE GARDEN OF THE ONE HUNDRED ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF THE GSOE.THAT HAD BEEN SCRATCHED. I BELIEVE THAT CHARLEY BAUMANN DID RIDE A WAGON IN THE PARADE. SO WE PROCEEDED TO SET UP OUR PORTABLE EQUIPMENT OF RING CURB, RING ROPE AND STANDARDS,PROPS,ETC. THAT I HAD HAD BUILT FOR DATES AWAY FROM BARABOO WHERE WE WOULD PUT ON A LITTLE STREET SHOW. THE LAST TIME WE HAD USED THIS SET UP HAD BEEN AT FREEDOM DAYS IN NORTH FREEDOM,WISC. SO HERE WE ARE ALL SET TO GO WITH THE DOGS AND PONIES , LIBERTY PONIES, ETC. RIGHT ON HERALD SQUARE ALONG WITH CATHY RIGBY AND SOME DANCERS. SO JOE GARGIOLA ANNOUNCED DIRECT FROM RINGLING BROS. BARNUM & BAILEY CIRCUS MARY RUTH AND HER POODLES AND PONY REVUE.
