Research makes 18-year-old Clyde's date of joining out August 16, 1921, on Howes Great London, in Washington Court House, Ohio. He ran off with a pal who later returned home to Bainbridge. Over the years, after Beatty achieved fame, everyone in Ross County claimed to have been that pal. But after his death, an article appeared with a photo of a fellow named Howard Smith, who said it was he, and told the tale of the morning of departure. The story appeared to be truthful, and anyhow it's as good as any.
