Like people some elephants when first introduced immediately become friends and for reasons unknown to me, others might become life long enemies. Among the latter elephants I have seen some pretty good battles resulting in chewed ears and tails. Consequently they are placed on the picket line and in transport vehicles in an order of compatibility and special care when allowing to roam free in the an excercise pen. A touchy-feely person who wants to pet an elephant on the tongue can manage to get himself bitten and even worse.
Franz Tish had his hand crunched in the teeth of one our CW elephants that were in his charge one night when we did this strange off property event. I am sorry that I don't know which lady it was, I was a clown at this time, but if I remember correctly she was docile cow and one not to complain too much; surly this was the reason Franz chose her for the trip. The elephant scooped up a beer can, and Franz attempted to extract the can it from her molars. Given the Historic Elephant Act that Franz was cast to follow, respect to him must be due because he came away unscathed except for a crushed hand and a black eye from my friend Sammy.
I think it was 1958 on Don Francisco's date in Syracuse, Roy Bush spent the week working with one arm held high, middle finger extended, to avoid that throbbing that comes from a mashed finger. The result of extracting a popcorn box from the mouth of one of his elephants.
when retrieving "contraband", it's all about remembering where the teeth are ... and that if they want to swallow whatever it is, it has to go down the middle, LOL.
I keep a pair of needle nose pliers handy around the kennel. Also a metal case that adheave tape used to come rolled on. I can prop the mouth open with the case and use the pliers to remove objects that are stuck in the pets mouth. Still have to be quick.

Blackie appears to have the " Do it Yourself " kind of Aproach
Question? Has any elephant ever bitten a human or other animal? I don't remember [theres that saying again] hearing or reading of this ever happening.

This could bring a whole new meaning to [getting your head chewed off].

Correction: It was Franz who gave Sammy the shiner.
