Barnum & Bailey's Parade #1

Of all the pictures taken of the Two Hemispheres band wagon, this one of the 40 horse hitch passing under the elevated railway in Brooklyn impresses me the most.

noticing that the "out wakers" were not leading the lead team says that the driver was actually handling the whole 40 ! wow !

Off topic. I found this clip of the new version of a Ringling elephant act (on the ringless show). Oh my God Buckles, you got to check this out. Paste the URL into your browser.

Maybe one of your fans can come up with the address of a London pub called "The 40 Horse Inn" which was where a hitch didn't make the turn and went "in" to whatever building was there before.

How wide a turning radius would you have wanted -- or did they just go straight through town and unhitch later?

Buckles....Forty camel hitch is a dazzler! As you know we (CWM/GCP) did forty horses on Two Hemispheres frequently. Dave Hale did a twelve camel hitch which was also spectacular. Problem with twelve camels is speed compared to horses. Everything behind it slows down and sometimes slowing horses, just starting the route and feeling great, was a problem. It all worked out and you may recal that Barbara and her pet leopard were stars of wagon the camels pulled. It was one of our finest segments...Paul Ingrassia

Richard Reynolds says - -

Barnum and Bailey paraded in Brooklyn for its first under canvas date but not in Manhattan when they were at the Garden. I do not think there was a street parade in Manhattan after about 1900 (when Forepaugh Sells did one) until RBBB paraded around 1921 for a milk benefit or some such. Forepaugh Sells substituted for B&B at Mad. Sq Garden while the latter was in Europe.

Same (re parades)was true for Ringling in Chicago. When they did the indoor date there to kick off the season, they did not parade.

The reason for no parades by B&B in Manhattan and RB in Chicago was that the baggage stock was not there. It did not join the shows until their respective first under canvas stands. Just think about it - -where on earth would B&B stable hundreds of horses in the middle of Manhattan.

They used rented teams to move the wagons from train to Garden and then across the bridges to Broooklyn.

There is somewhere a great photo of just Jake Posey's hands.

I will look for, and try to scan to Buckles, a shot I have of Arky and Tony Scott, their sons, and Jake Posey very late in his retirement years.

Larry, if you type 'circus' into the search box you'll get many, many results, but like I said there's also a ton of crap including lots of Peta clips (too bad the circus isn't as good at promoting itself as Peta is)Anyway there is a good bit of footage of Ringling under canvas. Unfortunately it is overlaid with innane gibberish, but theres some good views of the acts. For this, type in 'Here comes the Circus'
As another poster suggested, there are no viruses attached to YouTube clips as they are very well scanned by the site. Typing in 'Ringling' as a search gets some stuff including the complete Blue Show elephant act(if you have the stomach to look, that is)

Sorry to keep piping into the discussion with YouTube clips (promise this is the last), but you got to check out how this elephant kicks a soccer ball (flips it over his back and kicks with his hind leg. Pretty amazing stuff.
