Al G. Barnes blowdown #2 (Big Timber, Mont. 7/14/25)

These first two pictures show the remains of the pad top which must have been similar to what we had with the Cole Show. The tent was always spotted near the back door since it contained the ring stock as well as dressing areas for ladies and gentlemen that were partitioned off in the end of the tent.

Why was it called a pad top? A reference to pad (or bareback) horses?

That's a good question. It was sometimes called the Pad Room but why, I couldn't say.
It was simply a combination of the tent for ring stock and dressing tent.
The Cole Show pad top had one round end walled off for the dressing area
which was divided in half, ladies on one side and gents on the other.
With Al G. Barnes and other shows of the day, there would have been yet another tent for the baggage stock but since they didn't perform they didn't have to have access to the back yard.
This type tent wasn't necessary with the Cole Show since by the mid 40's the only baggage stock remaining were a few pull-over and pull-away teams.
