All the Circus Fans look so great at their functions. Its hard to believe that they are great lovers of the old time MUDD SHOWS. I will always be greatful to the members who sent my pictures that they took a zillion years ago to my dads address. I would never had gotten them otherwise. Thanks to all of you the greatest fans of all. I am also proud to be a member of this club now.
Is that Buckles kneeling down? He must have been "just a kid" 24 years ago!
Thanks for the compliment but that's me in the front row holding the cane.
Gary Hill, while I was at this 1982 function, Ted Svertesky showed up, he had some surplus Ringling elephants at a Park outside Wash. D.C. Would this be the same place "George" came from.
He had them quartered in Venice for a while and even at the Beatty Quarters in DeLand before he finally buying the site near Williston.
It was a park outside of D.C. if memory serves me. He was in Georgia with the Wild Kingdom guy for alittle while, after he left the park in Mesquite. (World Of Animals) Anyway they had him running loose with some young Africans as the story goes?
I never saw you with your moustache so long????
I never did either. Something wrong somewhere.
Bet one of your kids drew that moustach.
didn't Jewell New come to Ringling with an elephant from Mesquite World of Animals because it closed ? which would have many years before
Gary Hill would know. Both he and Jewell New were already with Ringling before I arrived.
Jewell and I picked up "Buddy" a male lion cub we had loaned the Houston Petting Zoo for the summer, when we made our way to Winter Quarters in Venice. We were to be part of the New Animal Park that was supposed to be at Circus World. That all fell apart and we got absorbed by Hugo Schmit and Dr. Henderson. The four elephants I had at WOA were Hugo (Doc), George, Gardner(Tarzan) and Bonnie the african (Konti). Shipped out the african in a Ringling Conession trailer loaded with furniture from Mattel, who was part owner of the GSOE. She punched hundreds of holes into that trailer with her tusks! Tarzan became Gardner and went to Rex, and George and Doc (Hugo) Went to Jim Fowler, in Georgia. Hugo was at the Jacksonville Zoo before he came to CW to Buckles.George was in Virginia and then came to Buckles later. I was offered him while I was in NJ but the boss there wasn't interested so I told them to give him to Buckles. I might add the truck with Hugo and George didn't make it 5 miles down the road before Hugo busted open the side door of the trailer. I had to shorten him up quite abit and told the driver NOT to go in with him, but two hours later at a truck stop in Dallas, Hugo nailed the guy in the trailer. Gunther and the Red Show was in Dallas at Fair Park and one of his guys made the trip with them.
His father of whom he refers was the great Mickey Graves, Supt. of Properties for many years with Ringling Bros. and Barnum And Bailey Circus.
