Ringling-Barnum Circus 1943

This came from a Bev Kelly magazine article:
"Even without those flags, a circus band is as American as ham on rye. A turn around the big top in the opening parade and they're off in a cascade of marches, polkas, waltzes and one-steps.

I well recall that Liberty bandwagon when RBBB played Atlatna in October 1943. It was builtin Sarasota for that seasn by Wm. Yeske.

There was a big General Outdoor type billboard acrss the street from my schoolhouse and a litho of that wagon filled it up. I was then in the 4th grade. On show day we arrived early thinking we'd tour the menagerie butI was sorely disappointed to find there was no menagerie tent that year. Instead the cage wagons used in this faux street parade in the big top (as shown in this picture) were spotted in the back yard. So we went back there but the cages were closed up - -dang. That bandwagon was spotted nearby - -close to the back door - - as was the Two Jesters steam calliope. It was "cold " with no boiler fire aborning. That should have been a clue. So, yes, it came around the tent at the end of the parade in that matineee with no sound whatsoever. That too was a disappointment. I guess they fired it up for the night show. Also wiith no menagerie tent the elephants were just picketed outside in the backyard as were the camels. The Liberty bandwagon was very nice looking and was, for sure, the last one ever built for the Ringling show as a railer. It did not last long and after only a year or so got burned up under a shed in Sarasota quarters.

On the far left of that photo you can see some ladies in 1890s -1900s dresses. Before the parade they and some children in period clothes came into the big top and went to the center ring like they were lining up along a curbing to watch the parade come by. There was also a portrait litho of the brothers which can be partly seen as well.
