The new Rigling Show 136th edition Blue unit is heading to Nassau Coliseum L.I. NY.. The show opens Tuesday March 14th for a six day run.
Newsday LI NY reviewed the show at the recent stand in New Jersey and that review is in this morning's paper. The review was luke warm at best. Review was done by Steve Parks a staff writer for Newsday.
He states the last time the show opened in New York with less than 3 rings was when Barnum & Bailey and the Ringling Bros.were still around. He did mention Barnum's Kaleidoscope playing Bryant Park in 2000. But unlike that one ring circus, this circus after 125 years has no rings.
He mentions Emmy winner director Shanda Sawyer and Oscar winner Colleen Atwood giving them credit for attempting to weave a storyline in a Ringling show.
He claims you could call it a "theater in the half round performance of The Steriod Menagerie."
He also states the "Circus of Dreams" plot of this ringless Ringling attempt emphasizes family values. Really?
He does praise the work of Svetlana Shamsheeva with her birds, cats, and dogs, by calling her act "awww-inspiring".
Another act receiving positive accolades is the Kassaev Cossacks. This he says is an act that demonstrates the distance from three to zero rings very well. He notes that the speed of the act is accelerated and steeds gallop at top speeds because they are not limited to an accelerated cantor inside a ring. I will see for myself tomorrow night. I do believe he has a point with a Cossack act, the freedom to utilize the entire flooor of a venue may lend itself to better presentation. But do you build the entire show around this one act?
He finishes the review by saying the ringless Ringling still is a circus with greeatest-show-on-earth pretentions. However he states the "father knows best theme takes the edge off the vagabond freak show that's always been a part of its hyperbole". He raps up by stating "this edition is too homey an escape to lure runaways".
Mr.Parks makes some good points and reading thru his review I felt he wasn't too thrilled with the new format or the show itself. I believe his lack of circus performance knowledge and history hindered his appraisal of this edition.
Of course as any critic one must be careful not be too harsh or straight forward with negitive reviews. RBBB has placed many ads in his paper over the last few weeks. Plus i am sure the paper received a good amount of complimentry tickets as well. As any good critic when preparing a review they must leave the review somewhat open ended, unless they feel the event being reviewed is a total disaster. He certainly did that in his review of the Blue Unit. His review walked a fine line and was very much middle of the road. The review certainly was not full of positive praise, just a couple of highlights. Overall not encouraging at all.
Stay tuned for my review and then the New York City review as the show moves on to Madison Square Garden

High beams was having lunch with her hubby over in the "big city" next county over. I took her to a very exclusive hamburger stand in Monroe, really went all out.

Review itself is on the newsday.com site. Very lackluster, I don't think he liked the show much at all. It'll be interesting to see whether the city papers fawn over the theatrics or rip the show to shreds. Strong negatives and the whole ringless premise may be headed for the dustbin. Mr. feld can't be happy with the general critical response the show has gotten to date. At least, as Parks pointed out, teh audience still loves the elephants.

Low beams had to groom a hound from hell this morning. A four pound male Yorkie. Petey First I have to take two pain pills, then a tranquilizer and lay down for an hour. When he arrives its a merical we servive getting him out of his travel crate. Its very challenging. Thank god I was a wild animal trainer at one time. I am also not that much into movie stars. When you have seen Buckles and JC you have seen it all. I spotted a picture of Buckles in a TUX on another channel. It just did not do him a bit of justice. Give him bangles and sequine as only he can make any other male look pale. JC looks very natural in a TUX. I am a vegeterian. High Beams eats meat. Maybe thats why her Beams are higher then mine.

Great answers ladies. Karen, are you close to Monroe, NC? I live in Cheraw, SC. about 40 minutes away. Just thought I would ask.

More News on the Ringless 136th edition.
Down to eight elephants. Caught up with some people in the elephant department tonight and they told me Mysore was sent to the Gold unit. Doc was sent home from the Gold unit as he was becoming a little bit of a problem.
Animal walk tonight Nassau Coliseum LI NY. Very short one. I counted the eight elephants, 11 horses, and 2 Zedonks. A couple Alpaca are on the show but I did not see them. Turnout for the walk was pretty strong as a lot of locals showed with thier kids.
A representative from the show was being interviewed by a local LI TV network touting the pre-show and animal exhibit. Won't be much of an animal exhibit prior to show time. The animal ranks are pretty thin.
Stay tuned for my review after seeing the show Tuesday night the 14th.

Cole Bros Circus of the Stars opening this Friday in Deland has hit a bit of a snag.
The Chinese troupe engaged this season is having all types of issues getting out of China. They are to be featured in this year's show. Also the contortion act that was on the gold unit last year is stuck in I believe Brazil and he won't make the opening either.
Word has it they are scrambling in Deland trying to fill out the show for their opening.
Not sure if the Chinese troupe and the contortion act are temporary no shows and Cole is filling their spots with other acts for the first few weeks. Could be they may drop them altogether and move in another direction booking acts to replace them for the season.
Another chapter of As the Circus Wagon Wheel turns.
