When I grew up in small-town Mississippi in the segregated 1950s, The Rabbit Foot Minstrels would come to down every year, playing a several day stand as I recall. My father, who would go to see ANY performance held under a tent, would always take the family. Often, we were the only white faces in the audience. We were always treated with great courtesy and warmth. The all-black show was basically burlesque -- not strippers as I remember but a lot of burlesque-style sketches and comedians. There was also a line of high-stepping chorus girls. If memory serves, it was quite good.
