John and Buddy North

John Ringling North was quite the socialite and casual man about town spending most of his time in Europe.
He was not a "hands on" type owner as we see today, when the show was in Sarasota during the winter he would reside at the John Ringling Towers and after arising at the crack of noon he might be driven out to the quarters, ride his horse for a while, entertain a few people in his railroad car, stop by the office to sign a few papers and maybe even watch rehearsals but I'm sure he didn't meddle, that's what John Murray Anderson was paid for and who probably wouldn't have listened anyway.
Then it was back to the Ringling Towers and after dining with friends they would all make an entrance into the Mme. Toto Lounge well after midnight when the flotsum and jetsum had departed and spend the rest of the night in recreation.
Pat Valdo was the man responsible for hiring talent both in the U.S. and abroad.
After the dress rehearsal in Madison Sq. Garden, Mr. North and entourage all formally dressed would depart for the Stork Club where he would then do his act and in so doing managed to induce such people as Balanchine and Stravinsky to become involved with the show.
After the Ringling Show closed under canvas in 1956 and became successfully established in buildings, North sold the show to Roy Hofheinz and Irvin and Israel Feld in 1967. He then returned to Europe, resumed his usual lifestyle and eventually outlived all three.

I wish I had had my glasses on when I signed this contract. I did not think it said Mucking in the stalls twice a day. At least I can do it in one hour shifts now.

I wonder how things might have played out if the Norths hadn't prevailed in regaining control of RBBB in the mid-40's?

Hard to say. I always marvelled that with so many robust Ringling brothers, the next generation provided only two frustrated widows and a nephew to duke it out.
The same applies today but it is all moot because as soon as Soliel can figure out how to play arenas and auditoriums it will all become a distant memory.

I never laid eyes on His Immenence, JRN. But Henry (Buddy) North was a pleasure to meet. As I kid, imagine my delight when Mr. North's Christmas cards arrived with the RB logo. Later, I looked across a coliseum, and he entered with his white hair, perfectly tailored suit, a smile for everyone, and two German Shepherds on leashes. Quite a sight, and we sat and visited throughout an entire performance. He patiently answered my questions about the great owners and performers. Everyone told me he was an altogether different person than his brother.

Soliel is opening an arena show this month. It is called DELIRIUM and features the "Music of Cirque du Soleil", apparently it is a concert type show. Once they've played their proposed route of 115 towns, they'll be able to figure out all the arena stuff as you suggested. It will be quite a DELIRUM for the Greatest Show on Earth. Billy

JOHN RINGLING NORTH IS THE MAN WHO TRIED TO BANKRUPT THE CIRCUS SEVERAL TIMES TO AVOID PAYING THE FAMILIES AFTER THE HARTFORD FIRE AND WAS COUGHT SKIMMING MONEY FROM THE PROFITS. DOES HE DESERVE TO BE LISTED IN THE CIRCUS HALL OF FAME?

Talk about muck raking! Where did you hear that story? Someone has their facts a little mucky. Any one out their have the real story? Every dime was paid to the victims, not that it helped the pain of the living. It was paid in full.

THESE TWO MEN WERE INSTRUMENTAL IN MAKING THE MONUMENT TO THE VICTUMS OF THE FIRE AND MOST IMPORTANT THE IDENTIFICATION OF LITTLE MISS 1565. RICK DAVEY SPENT YEARS OF INVESTIGATION. HE IS A MAN OF HIGH INTEGRITY AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AS A FIRE INSPECTOR

I have already read the book. John North made the circus possible in the first place. It was his money. I have yet to meet a wealthy human being that most people will find something to smear their name. And its always after their death when they can't defend themselves. Most don't when they are alive because they don't have to prove anything to anybody, and could care less. Wish I was that wealthy. Jealous people will always be around. I have learned to never believe everything I read just because someone has their own ideas. Too many books have been proven false after the damage is done. Just look at MS Stark and Modic. People will believe what they want as is their right. It does not make it the truth.

You mentioned the Fire Inspector. Our Assistant Fire Chief cuts my lawn. I groom his three Maltese and he grooms my lawn. Nothing to do with the Hartford fire, just thought I would throw that one in as a frebee.
