I always marvelled that after working the elephant act, Barbara would comment on how well the audience had responded or hadn't responded. She always worked to the crowd and mentioned that if she spotted someone who was especially enjoying the act, she would work directly to them. On the other hand I never knew if there were 10 people or 10,000 in there, with me it was strictly business. The only exception was the year we did the Barber Shop routine with "Anna May" and "Peggy". When we reached the point where Anna May would go to the front of the ring and sharpen the razor on her leg, I heard this voice say "Is that Anna May?" and six feet away sat Dustin Hoffman. It seems that the year before Ben made the Lincoln Center date with Anna May and one day backstage after giving Mr. Hoffman and his kid a ride on her, he mentioned to Ben that he was planning to make a movie about two guys appearing in a circus that had the worst acts in the business and might he and Anna May be available. Of course nothing came of it but that project eventually turned into the ill fated "Ishtar". |

I believe that Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, and I share the same stature; somehow I think that Al would have been the most successful elephant man of our lot.
