Buckles -- In one of your postings, you said you want to keep fighting to keep elephants in the circus. I guess these days, in a way, zoos may have to fight for elephants, also. Sydney, Australia's much-loved Taronga Zoo (and a few cousin zoos) want to import a herd of 8 Asian elephants from Thailand. And Taronga is building a solid case with the general public to win support for its plan. You can read the details on Taronga's website: www.zoo.nsw.gov.au. (Once there, go to Zoo News, then Questions and Answers.) I printed out all 16 pages. On the first three pages, the zoo answers sensitive questions: Why import Asian elephants? Were these elephants taken from the wild? Is this "simply a commercial endeavour?" What happens to Taronga's older elephants when the new elephants arrive? The zoo thoughtfully answers each question and builds a solid case for importing the herd. And then follows up its answers with 13 pages full of support from the public. Thirteen printed pages filled with pro-zoo/pro-elephant quotes from people who love the zoo, who love elephants, and who support Taronga's plans. --- ToddP
I just printed out the 16 pages. Having elephants on display to the public is one of the ways to go, but showing what an elephant can do in the circus is still the best way to go. Just read the comments on how much better the elephants look that work in the circus. A mind is a terriable thing to waste. Eating, drinking, pooping 24 hours a day seems awful boring. Thats how they get in trouble like in Africa.
