The Great Unus (Franz Furtner)

I was 13 when my mother and I saw the Ringling Show in 1948 and these are the two acts that impressed me the most.

This is how my day begins everyday. Then I have a cup of coffee and Buckles Blog and it gets better and calmer.

You and your mother did so much together. Any wonder I worshiped her? You were so lucky to have her as a parent. I envy your childhood. You learned so much that other children never dreamed about. Thank you for sharing. Maybe she was not a cookie baker, but anyone can do that. Just look at the wealth of knowledge she shared with you. You were blessed to have her.

I saw Unus on Ringling in the early '60s. He was very much the star of the show. But one experience with him served to remind me of the fate awaiting all of us. He had been retired a season or two, and I saw him on the lot, just this close but so far from the announcement, the spotlight, and the brass band, eating a cold cut sandwich, sitting in the cab of a camper, all alone.
