Unidentified

This is a post card titled "Hagenbeck-Wallace" Winter Quarters. It caught my eye since I don't recall ever having seen a man do this "waltz and rear lay-back" before. Always considered a ladies trick.

In Mabel Stark's personal scrapbooks are photos of her in this trick. She was still under contract to Ringling when Mr. John ended cat acts in 1925, and they cast her as an equestrian. She and Dorothy Herbert did perfect laybacks, with Dorothy doing hers as the horses cleared hurdles. I am grateful to have known Dorothy at Jungleland. She was then Mrs. A.W. Kinnard. Roger

Are you sure this is a male? Sometimes at horse shows it is hard to tell the difference.

You might be right!

It looks as if the rider is sidesaddle, another hint that it might be a lady.

I'm sorry I opened this can of worms, particularly since it's a subject I know absolutely nothing about.
But don't you think the rider, either male or female, would need a side saddle to grip with?

A show saddle such as this would have a horn. Is it an English saddle or one special made for this type of act. Can Shannon turn the face upside down to make the ID plainer? You would think after Horse Fantasy Review I would know something about saddles. Somethings are just more important than others. I know a special bra was worn to stop bouncing ( I think they call them sports bras now) so this accounts for a flat chest.

I turned my flat screen upside down and the face does look like a woman to me? Gary
