87229_thumb, originally uploaded by bucklesw1. Nazi symbols and slogans were found spray-painted on Circus World Museum property after authorities extinguished a fire there early Monday morning. The fire that consumed a corner of the C.P. Fox Wagon Restoration Building was "suspicious," said Baraboo Police Lt. Rob Sinden. "It was not a natural fire," Sinden said, adding that suspicious things were found around the area. He would not say what items were found.

Police probe fire at Circus World Museum State Journal staff Baraboo police are investigating a suspicious fire discovered early Monday at a Circus World Museum building housing antique circus wagons. A police officer, Tyler Pointon, saw billowing black smoke coming from the C.P. Fox Wagon Restoration Building at about 1 a.m., according to Baraboo police and Steve Freese, museum director. The officer discovered flames at a corner on the west end of the building. The Baraboo Fire Department put out the fire, and damage was confined to that corner. None of the 19 rare wagons on display and under repair in the building was damaged, said Freese. It appears someone doused gasoline on a stack of fiberglass garbage can tops adjacent to the building, then lighted it, he said. Anyone with information about the fire can contact the police at 608-355-2720

Hagenbeck 1893, originally uploaded by bucklesw1. Attached are two Hagenbeck photos from the Chicago World's Fair of 1893. The first one shows their building on the Midway and the second one shows one of the mixed acts that they presented in Chicago. According to Frank Buck, prior to World War I, the Hagenbecks were the chief distributors of wild animals to Europe and America. All of the German diplomatic missions in the jungle outposts of the world served as Hagenbeck agents, and would acquire and send animals back to him in Germany. The British naval blockades of World War I ended this monopoly and provided an opportunity for people like Buck to establish themselves as dealers in wild animals.

Buckles: Here are a few pictures from yesterdays' Mark David Pilger Memorial held in the Hippodrome @ Circus World, if you wish to share them with your bloggers. About 50 people showed on a blustery day , at 2:00 PM, to celebrate Marks' life, and accomplishments. There was barely a "dry eye" in the house. Such a thrilling tribute to ones shortened life. Picture 1 - Circus World logo, in the Hippodrome. Picture 2 - Jay Pilger, Marks' brother, leading the service. Picture 3 - Montage of Marks' pictures of the years of his life, in and out, of show buisness. A memorial fund has been set up for Mark, if anyone should care to contribute. From the French Circus Web Site, BurgusCircus, a recent picture of former Ringling Brothers lion trainer, Wolfgang Holzmair (picture by Christophe Roullin). I think he looks great. Although somewhat overshadowed by Gunther Gebel-Williams, they formed an incredible tandem for Ringling Brothers in the 70's. Do you or any of your readers know what he is doing now, or where he is living? I know that Mr. Holzmair wrote a book. Has anyone read it? I also read where he has served as a mentor to the Circus Pinder's wild animal trainer! , Frederic Edelstein. The gentleman in the picture, to the left of Wolfgang Holzmair, is Remy Demantes, the founder and Director of The Museum Of The Circus And Illusion (http://www.museeducirqueetdelillusion.com/) in Dampierre-en-Burly, France. Mr. Demantes is very knowledgeable on the subject of the big cats and has a great passion for them. I believe he maintains a private collection of approximately twelve big cats, mostly tigers, on his private residence in France. Henry

The Mufwe Lodge is in Zambia's Luangwa National Park. About a dozen elephants make this trek through the hotel lobby about twice a day for three weeks and then sporadically for another four or so. Let's see Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge top this. RJRIII
