Next time you see the HOLLYWOOD sign, notice the TV and radio transmitting towers behind it. Gene Autry put them there, for his KTLA Channel 5 operations. Just over that ridge, which is Mt. Lee, is Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, the resting places of hundreds of stars, including Clyde Beatty.

Autry became one of Hollywood's richest men, some say outshining Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. He is the only performer with 5 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame--for film, TV, radio, recording, and live performance. His Autry Museum is a must-visit for students of the West. Aside from performing, his great love later in life was owning the California Angels baseball team. Autry lived to the age of 92.

Autry had a small scale live steam train in his back yard. It was a 15" gauge (distance between rail) model of the Southern Pacific Daylight. The engine still exists and is currently at a small amusement park called Little America about 60 miles from me. I'm hoping to go to their Steam Days event this year and maybe get to ride behind it.
