This impressive guy is at the Chiang Mai Zoo in Northern Thailand. Visitors can get this close. I tried to speak with the handler but he spoke very little English.
This chap was rubbing both tusks back and forth across the cement barrier and a grove started appearing in both tusks. The steel covers prevent this now.

Are those 2 braces covering
splices in the ivory or some
other purpose Dennis
I have visited the Maesa
elephant camp that has the
largest herd of elephants
in northern Thailand & was
a remarkable experience
Also the Dusit Thani Zoo
in Bangkok has the King's
Royal Elephants in their
own open temple & twice
each day the lead brings
the group to the central
lake for a swim & then
leads them back on their
own without human effort
That wandering vagabond circus
impressario Ray MacMahon spends
a few months a year in Chiang Mai
A devout student of the culture

Most the King's elephants have been moved out of Bangkok to a more rural setting.
Sorry to learn that Dennis
That parade was impressive
