A color photo of this float was utilized to illustrate Vachel Lindsay's ode to the calliope in my 1960s high school textbook for American literature. The editors likely didn't know it wasn't a true calliope, such is the general knowledge of such things. No, I didn't clip the page for a scrapbook. I doubt that one finds many circus images in today's textbooks, which is one place where the battle needs to be waged.
